Saskatchewan Cancer Agency and Union Reach Agreement

A new collective agreement between the Saskatchewan Government Employees’ Union (SGEU) and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency (SCA) was signed on November 22, 2012.

“We are pleased that an agreement has been reached,” said Bernie Young, Acting CEO of the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations Inc. (SAHO) “We have been working diligently through the collective bargaining process and believe we have provided an offer that meets the needs of the employer, the union, and still puts clients and patients first. This agreement provides an opportunity for everyone to move forward with the work of caring for clients and patients.”

The more than 560 SGEU members include a diverse group of employees such as nurses, administrative professionals, pharmacists, information technology specialists, mammography technicians, and others have been without a contract since December 2009.

“Our main objectives going into bargaining were to achieve a fair agreement for our members, while at the same time protecting our patients from the stresses and disruptions that can come from job action,” said Trent Edwards, co-chair of the SGEU negotiating committee. “Despite this difficult round of bargaining, we feel we have achieved both.”

An agreement in principle was signed on the evening of September 20, 2012.
